How AI-Assisted Watermark Detection Works

Before a watermark can be removed, software must first answer three questions: Is a watermark present? Which specific model generated it? And what are its exact sub-pixel coordinates?

1. Multi-Stage Detection Pipeline

Automated detection combines heuristic geometric scanning with statistical cross-correlation:

  1. Corner Region Isolation: Modern AI platforms place watermarks in the corners of the canvas. The engine restricts initial scanning to the outer $15%$ boundary.
  2. Luminance Normalization: High-pass filtering removes low-frequency image gradients (e.g., sunset gradients) so correlation focuses strictly on high-frequency edges.
  3. Template Bank Matching: The normalized image patch is correlated against a calibrated bank of known watermark geometries (Google AI Studio, Gemini 2.0, Imagen 3, Veo).
  4. Sub-Pixel Refinement: A quadratic Taylor series fits a continuous paraboloid surface over the discrete correlation matrix, yielding coordinates accurate to $1/50 ext{th}$ of a pixel.
